"One more time, lass..."
"Phil, if you say the words one more time again, I will push you off the-"
"Okay, okay!" he said defensively, raising his hands. "Fine. You know it?"
"Of course I know it," Kate answered, a dangerous edge to her voice. "You have been through it a million frigging times. I know the plan."
Dr Phillips sighed. "Just checking. Sorry."
"So you should be," smirked Kate, glad to keep him from obsessing for the minute. He was annoyingly obsessive over plans for things, having to double, triple, quadruple, etc check everything again and again and...
He glanced at the huge steel gray monster ahead of them, and rubbed his hands in a boyish gesture of excitement. "Nervous?"
Kate mused on it for a second. Was she nervous? "No," she replied decidedly.
He raised an eyebrow.
Git. She'd always wanted to be able to do that.
"Seriously," she confirmed. "It's hardly the scariest thing in the world, it's only B & E..."
Phil snorted. "Right, lass. There's more to you than I give you credit for?"
"Oh, are you referring to my outstanding, Victoria Cross-worthy bravery?"
"No, you're completely bloody insane!"
She scowled at him as he laughed, affronted. "One to talk! The breaking in thing was your idea!"
"Actually," he chuckled. "You were the one that forced me into going into the ship, lass!"
She smiled. "You wouldn't have just left them. You're too nice for that."
He rolled his eyes. "Says who?"
"You're the doctor," she laughed.
"Trust me, if it were only the Captain and the pissheads I would have left it," he replied, with a scowl. "Come on, let's move."
Kate followed him, frowning gently. It wasn't like Phil to curse like that, especially about another member of the crew.
They walked down the pier, and as they approached the gangplank to the ship, Phil turned, catching her hand and pulling her behind a customs building. "Right, you ready?"
His scowl had gone, and there was nothing but excitement and steely determination in his face.
She looked at the huge, looming steel ship, more like a giant, floating, metallic demon, and starting to feel a little nervous.
Now or never.
"Yep," she said, smiling confidently.
"Okay, go, and good luck," he said, pushing her forward.
She staggered a little - klutz on the land as she was - , before taking a deep breath and striding forward, up to the guard at the gangplank.
The one with the higher rank - the one not busy - looked at her suspiciously and with distaste at her slightly dirty jeans. "What is your business here?"
She went up to the rail and leaned on it in a slightly provocative pose. "I was wondering if you could give me directions to the Castillo Arms?"
His eyes flicked to her low jumper. "Sure," he said, in quite a different tone of voice. "When are you going?"
"I was going to leave now, but I'm a little... lost..."
His gaze flickered from her face downwards, and back again. "If you go up there..."
Kate pretended to listen as he rhymed off some directions, fingering with the syringe in her pocket and pretending not to see Phil walking nonchalantly up behind the guard - and trying not to laugh.
"Hey-!"
There was a loud smack!, and the guard turned just in time to see the other guard crumple to the floor, but not before Kate had his arm.
He struggled against her, cursing and kicking out against her, but she had his arm twisted and the syringe right in the crook of his elbow.
He was suddenly silent, and he slumped. Kate let go of his arm, and he slumped, giving Kate a clear view of Phil's quizzical look.
"Where'd you learn to inject like that, lass?! Don't tell me you're an ex-heroin addict..."
She laughed. "Almost - my mum was in a lot of pain leading up to her death, and our island population was 28, now 26. I was the nurse. Where'd you learn to punch like that?!"
He winked. "Secret. Right, now go away while I change into this guy's uniform."
She stayed put.
He laughed. "Get lost."
Kate chuckled and turned away, but not before she caught a glimpse of Phil's muscly chest as he pulled off his shirt.
A few moments passed, before Phil told her to turn around.
She whistled. "Don't you look smart!"
Phil snorted. "Uh-huh. Right, my name is Warrant Officer Smith-"
"Original," commented Kate.
"It's his actual name, lass. You don't actually know my name, it's just in case you're expecting them to call me Doctor Phillips..."
"I'm not that thi - Ouch!" she screeched, as Phil grabbed her roughly by the arm.
"You're an urchin I dragged off the street, remember?" he muttered. "Right, now, come on..."
"Phil, if you say the words one more time again, I will push you off the-"
