Kate held the warm mug of cocoa in her hands, letting the heat from it warm her hands. It was absolutely freezing on board, so everyone was taking refuge in the cabins and canteen. However, a lot of the 'men' (the 18/19 year olds and the ship officials) were getting "loaded on the gunwall", so she figured it was best to lay low in the kitchen.
Rum, in her opinion, was a vile drink that turned men into complete wasted scoundrels who would hit on anything in a skirt.
And sometimes, they went too far when they were drunk...
So, for the female teenage pirates, it was far, far better to lay low and be safe.
So that was why she was sitting in the kitchen on her own, with only a mug of cocoa for company.
Like the loner that she'd always been.
She'd never fit in properly, and no one ever said it would be different on board a pirate ship... pirates were a motley crew, and no one ever really 'fit in' as such.
She'd just hoped that it would get easier.
But even though newbies usually attracted attention, the only people to have actually noticed her here were Katara and the Captain with the roving eye. How she hated him so...
Him and all of the other men, they were monsters, especially when they were on the rum.
Nelson's folly, indeed.
She sighed and looked into the chocolatey depths of her cocoa. Things didn't get easier, she still had all of her oldsecurities - she still wished that she was prettier, smarter, wittier, flirtier, all those other things.
But it wasn't going to happen. Not in this lifetime, anyway...
A rank smell was coming nearer. She sniffed, and nearly gagged on the rank sickly sweet smell of rum.
Someone was coming. The smell was getting nearer.
Heaven above, this was disgusting. The stench carried in the air was disgusting and was invading her nostril space. It was the most horrible thing...
She was so glad that her dad had never drank, and Adam didn't really like getting wasted - and especially not on rum. Heaven forbid that her mother should have touched it. She regarded it as the stuff of all evils, the spawn of the devil.
Maia, however, was partial to the not-so-occasional vodka. That meant she liked to get pissed every Friday night with her friends, and spent all day Saturday with a hangover. Kate had gone with her once, and swore never to do it again. She was no small-town, naive girl, but Maia's pace of binge-drinking turned her.
How Adam had married her, she didn't know. Maia and Adam were as like as chalk and cheese.
Kate didn't like her much. Could you tell?
The rum smell was coming nearer. Eugh.
A flicker of panic started up in Kate. Who was this coming? She was completely defenceless, and completely alone.
She glanced around the kitchen, and her fears were quieted by seeing the heavy pans hanging on the walls. One hit with those would knock an assailant out.
The rum stench was really strong now, and even more disgusting. She glanced towards the door, and breathed in relief.
It was only Abe, the cook.
"Lord, you scared me there Abe," she breathed.
Abe staggered over to her - he was completely, and utterly, bolloxed.
"Helloooooooooo," he slurred. "Why.. ish, you heere?"
She laughed nervously. "How much did you drink?"
"Me? Drrrrink?" he slurred, standing up tall. "Nuffin of the sorrrrt, lass."
She smiled gently.
He frowned and stared at her. "What's yourrrrr name?"
"Kate? Mercia?" she asked. He was definitely wasted.
He frowned, then smiled at her, showing all of his not-so-nice teeth at her. "You'rrrrrrre a prrrrrrrretty lass, arrren't you?"
Kate's heart starting beating at 120 a minute, but she laughed nervously anyway. "Abe, you're drunk."
"Meeee? Drrrrunk? Neverrrr," he said, speaking as if his mouth was full of marbles, moving closer to her.
"Abe, I think you should go to your cabin."
He grinned toothily. "Ayee, would you like to come with me?"
Her heart was beating fast in terror, as he moved closer to her, the stench of the rum filling up her nostrils and mouth and making her want to gag.
"No," she said firmly. "Go away."
"Awk, come on lassss," he slurred.
"No!" she exclaimed, backing away from him, and banging into a pot.
He still came closer to her, so she grabbed the handle of the nearest pan to her.
He frowned. "Och, therrre'lll be no need fer that."
She backed into a wall. "I know the rules about hitting people on board, but Abe, I swear to God, if you so much as put your hand anywhere near, I will-"
"Now, there's no need to threaten," a voice said from the door.
Kate looked over, and a young man of about 19 made his way towards them.
"Abe, I think you've had a little too much to drink," he said firmly, tapping his arm and winking at Kate. "I think you should go to your cabin now."
"Och, I was only having a bit of fun, Doc," Abe slurred.
"It's gone too far," the guy said. "Go on, away with you."
Abe started muttering fiercely under his breath, and staggered out the door.
The "Doc" turned to her, smiling gently. "You alright, lass?"
"I'm fine," she said, hanging the pan up on the wall. "Terrified, but fine."
"You shouldn't be in here on your own, not when they're drinking," he frowned.
She smiled. "I can look after myself."
"I'm sure you can!" he laughed. "After hearing you threaten Abe like that! I should be scared to come near you!"
She laughed and extended her hand, hiding the sheer sense of relief that she felt. She was so scared, and if she had hit Abe, she would have been thrown off of the ship. "I'm Kate."
"Dr. Phillips," he said, shaking it.
"Oh, so you're the famous doctor, and my knight in shining armour" she smiled. "Nice to finally meet you."
"Not so famous," he laughed. "But call me Phil."
"What's your real first name?" she asked.
He winked at her. "It's a secret."
She laughed, intrigued.
Phil gestured at her cold cup of cocoa. "Looks like you could use another mug of that, lass."
"I definitely could," she smiled. Phil... he seemed really nice. He'd saved her... and if looks were anything to go by, he was pretty sexy. Dark haired, dark eyed, with some slight but extremely sexy stubble...
"Mind if I join you?" he asked.
"Course not."
He bent over to get the cocoa powder, and Kate found her eyes sliding to check out his ass, but immediately reprimanded herself.
Kate! That's the doctor!
And the other side of her was saying ... So?
He made the cocoa for both of them, and turned to her, handing her a mug. "Cheers!"
She smiled. "Cheers!"
Cheers, indeed...
