Katara laughed. "Don't worry about me. I'm tougher than I look." It was true. During her first week, a bold young lad- Kwon, or something- slightly older than Katara had a little too much to drink. He leered at the quiet girl sitting in the corner, and although she ignored him at first, when he began to really push the boundaries he ended up with his head in the barrel of rum. He hadn't spoken to her since. But Katara had registered something else. "Sedatives?" She wasn't stupid... but she was a farmer's daughter. She hadn't got much of an education. Her reading skills were minimal- never mind her knowledge of medical supplies!

Kate blushed. "Yeah... I wanted to be a doctor, before... before I gave up on life and joined the ship," she laughed. "And besides, I'd enjoy seeing them lying doolally on the ground."

"Flopping all over the place, panting... and junk..." Katara guessed wildly. God... a doctor. Kate must be smart. Like, really, really smart. Katara wasn't stupid, she knew it, but she wasn't anywhere near as good as that... Doctor Philips was the ship's current medic. He was a young lad of 19 or so, and he was one of the few who didn't get drunk. He kept himself to himself, really, but he was polite, and Katara had a sort of respect for him. She didn't like him as such. He was still a man. But he was an improvement on the ship's stereotype.

Kate frowned. "Kind of... they'd flop a bit, but they'd be more like what they'd go like on drugs. They'd be completely confused... or I could knock them out." Whatever Dr Phillips had in there, she guessed. She had no idea what was in the medical store, and she guessed that that was how he wanted it kept. There was maybe a couple of drug addicts on board who would do anything to get their hands on morphine... She was intending to go and offer some help to him though. It wasn't much, but if it made a bit of difference... And sexism was alive and active on this ship. She rarely got to do the useful, exciting stuff on board - usually a lot of the older guys believed the old fashioned value that women should clean - one of them, Nate, or something, had ordered her - not asked, ordered - to "go holystone the deck." Hell, had he got taught a lesson...

Katara nodded knowledgeably, even though she didn't feel very... er... knowledgable? She sighed, stretching up her arms and looking up and down the deck. "I think I'll go make myself useful," she mused. "I feel like... tidying something. Or cleaning. Lord help me, there's nothing better to do..." She smiled briefly at Kate, then moved on, to find something, anything... A distraction.
