"Do you miss your family?" Kate asked gently.

Katara smiled at her. "Yeah, a lot." But it'd be okay... "Miss yours?"

Kate shrugged. "My adoptive parents are dead. My brother still lives on the island, but I don't really miss him that much, oddly." And she didn't. She'd been close to Adam, but she'd just realised that another chapter of his life was opening, and she didn't have a plot in it. He had a life without her, and she wouldn't begrudge him one second of it.

"I don't like most of my brothers," admitted Katara. "Sokka's the only one I really got on with, but even we had our moments."

Kate grinned. "I know what you mean. Adam and I had a huge fight on my dad's boat one day, and it ended up with me pushing him off it! I love him though, but I'm not too keen on his new wife though," she said, wrinkling her nose. She actually thought that Maia was a bit of a trollop, if she was honest. She didn't like her at all, but if Adam loved her, that was all that mattered, right? "How many brothers and sisters do you have?" she asked Katara.

"Oh... about six give or take," she smiled. "There's me, Sokka, Lee, Jet, Yue, Song and... Toph." That was them, wasn't it? Song was already married. She had a young baby, called Hope. Hope was a sweet little thing. Katara did like little children. Sokka and her used to do a lot of babysitting for the neighbours. Now they were cute! Katara knew in her heart that she would despise being the sort of wife her mother expected her to be... But a child... she'd like that.

Kate nodded, resisting the temptation to ask another question. Everyone on board ship knew that Katara was searching for her lost sister, but no one knew the whys or wherefores of that. No one really wanted to. You learn that sometimes, ignorance is really bliss. Especially if something is illegal. Piracy was already illegal, without anything else being added on! "What are they like?"

"Okay. Too many conflicting personalities. There are WAY too many arguments!" Far too many...

"I'm sure it's not that bad," Kate laughed.

Katara grinned. "No, not really." Lie. "Do we know if we'll be pulling into port today?"

"I think so... maybe. Possibly. No idea," Kate admitted. "I haven't been told. I'm assuming so, I heard Abe say the winds were going to get a good bit stronger... it would be nice to get into port though," she added.

"There'll be more rum tonight," Katara said, slightly miserably. "There's no shortage of that. I'm sick of cleaning up after the men."

Kate shuddered. "God, I hate rum, but not for that. I've been on this bloody boat for two weeks and drunk guys have already made passes at me. I hate it. The odd rum punch is nice, but neat rum every single night, and lots of it... it's just vile."

Katara nodded sympathetically. She hated men. Those leering grins; their cruel laughter; grabbing hands... the stench of rum hot on their breath... Men- especially these... these wild ones... were disgusting, vile creatures who ought to be locked up. Even her brother, Sokka, was a menace- even her own, sweet father had his moments... Yet she cleaned up their mess. She just did it. She wasn't sure why. Toph hated the way Katara tried to look after people. It sparked a lot of... well, pretty vicious arguing, Katara supposed. However they came to accept each other... and love each other. It was... nice. "No self-control," she sighed. "Don't worry. Just get out of their way until they've sobered up and you'll be fine."

"I'm intending to," Kate said firmly. "I'm going to hide out in the kitchen. They shouldn't come in there, and if they do, I'll go to the medical room and arm myself with a couple of syringes filled up with sedatives. I'd advise you to do the same," she added grimly, looking at Katara and registering how pretty she was.
